Where the lifecycle splits
Solutions engineering commonly helps a buyer understand, evaluate, and design around a product before purchase. Forward deployed engineering is usually strongest after a strategic commitment, when someone must make the system work in production.
Real organizations blur the boundary, so use this as a diagnostic rather than a universal rule.
Four questions reveal the role
Ask these before optimizing your interview preparation.
- Do I own production code or only a proof of concept?
- Does my accountability continue after contract signature?
- Is compensation tied to quota, OTE, or pipeline?
- Who owns stabilization, adoption, and handoff?
Neither role is inherently better
Solutions engineering can provide strong commercial judgment, product breadth, and customer influence. FDE work can provide deeper production ownership. The right choice depends on whether you want to sell, design, build, operate, or combine several of those responsibilities.
Community discussions are used to discover questions. Company responsibilities and compensation prioritize official or first-party sources.
